Cileine de Lourenco

Professor de Lourenço is a native of Brazil, but has lived most of her life in the United States, with some intervals in Germany, Panamá and Mexico. In Mexico, she was the resident director of a Spanish language program for The Ohio State University. She has traveled extensively in Latin America and has conducted research in Brazil and Cuba. Dr. de Lourenço’s research interests have centered on questions on race, ethnicity, gender and social class in Latin American and Latina/o literature and cinema, and among Brazilian immigrant women in the US. Recently, in collaboration with Dr. Judith McDonnell, she has published several articles on Brazilian immigrant women. Currently, she is working on a research project analyzing transnationality of race as represented in film. This project entails a comparative study of Brazilian and Cuban films from the late 90s to present.
Professor de Lourenço came to Bryant in 1999, and since then has taught 21 different courses, most related to Latin America and Latinas/os. She played a fundamental role in the creation of the modern languages program, which is now a thriving example of the growth of Bryant’s College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. de Lourenço’s passion for Latin American cultures is reflected in the classes she teaches at Bryant.
