Kirsten Hokeness

Picture
Professor Hokeness teaches a variety of science classes, which by definition are global in nature. Microbiology and Immunity and Disease for example, explore the nature of disease and immunity and stress the fact that infectious disease knows no global boundaries and effect the population as a whole.  Her research explores the realm of the medical sciences, spending time previously examining immune requirements for fighting viral and bacterial infections.

Additionally, Dr. Hokeness has examined the effects of adding Vitamin D to current cancer treatments to see if it enhanced tumor killing.  She worked closely with Dr. Reid, another science professor at Bryant, to examine mold exposure and the effects on the immune system.  Currently she is working with the communication department to examine attitudes, beliefs and knowledge about vaccines, investigating trends that show college-aged students are one of the largest populations against vaccines. This interdisciplinary work will help to understand the mechanisms that currently exist to communicate about vaccines and to determine whether or not they are effective in certain populations.  The importance of vaccines in preventing the spread of disease is truly fascinating and has a large effect on the global population.  All of her work is done and supported by the work of undergraduates at Bryant University.
